Robert Ross is a Portfolio Manager for the Private Equity Portfolio at the California State Teachers' Retirement System. In this role, he co-manages the implementation of CalSTRS' private equity strategies and sub-strategies and oversees the co-investment program. He joined CalSTRS in April 2013. Mr. Ross's current responsibilities include the management, development, and implementation of private equity strategies for the buyout, venture capital, expansion equity, distressed debt, and, energy sub-sectors. He mentors junior level staff and is a member of the Private Equity Investment Review Committee. Prior to joining the team at CalSTRS, Mr. Ross spent more than a decade honing his skills in portfolio management, complex financial analysis, market research, and trend analysis. Mr. Ross began his career in the private sector as an associate in corporate finance and merchant banking for OffRoad Capital. His career continued in an upward trajectory with the following roles: senior analyst with Frazier Healthcare Ventures, senior associate with Honeywell Capital Management, vice president of private equity and venture capital at Zurich Financial Services, and investment professional at TIAA-CREF. Mr. Ross has an aptitude for sourcing, negotiating, and monitoring fund, secondary, and co-investments that support CalSTRS private equity asset allocation strategies. He possesses strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills that have contributed to solid returns for the private equity portfolio. Mr. Ross holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics with a minor in business administration from the University of California, Berkeley and a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in finance, accounting, and entrepreneurship from the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business.
