Genie Cesar-Fabian has served as ILPA’s General Counsel since January 2024. Prior to joining ILPA, she practiced law as both outside and in-house counsel in the financial services industry for over 20 years, beginning as a securities/financial services litigator at AmLaw 100 firms. She later joined a middle market private equity firm as its first General Counsel/CCO, successfully building its legal and compliance department from the ground up. Having achieved partnership and been designated Head of ESG & Sustainability, Ms. Cesar-Fabian transitioned out of sponsor-side private equity and joined a tech-enabled asset manager as its first General Counsel, where she helped the leadership team lay the foundation for a legal department designed to scale. In January 2024, Ms. Cesar-Fabian returned to private equity as ILPA’s first General Counsel.
In addition to her legal and financial services work, she presently serves as a subject matter author for Thomson Reuters on topics relating to ESG and as a Strategic Advisor to BlueFlame AI. She is also a founding member of both the St. John’s School of Law Alumnae Leadership Council, and its OUTLaws & Allies Alumni Association. Ms. Cesar-Fabian has been recognized by N.O.W. as a “Woman of Power and Influence,” by Mergers & Acquisitions as a “PE Innovator in ESG” and a “Leader in DEI,” and by Crain’s NY Business as a “Notable LGBTQ Leader & Executive.” She has also received her law school Alumni Association’s St. Thomas More award (for outstanding moral leadership over a career) and the Erica B. Fine ’82 Public Interest Champion Award (for commitment to public interest work). She regularly speaks at industry events on topics relating to women in financial services, US securities regulation, ESG, and DEI. Ms. Cesar-Fabian holds a B.A. in Politics from NYU and a J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law.
