Dipping Your Toes into ILPA Education

If you’ve ever looked at the ILPA Institute calendar and thought…“This all looks incredible… but where do I even begin?,” we’re here to help.

Whether you’re brand new to ILPA, new to private markets, or simply ready to take fuller advantage of the education available to you, the ILPA Institute was intentionally designed to meet you where you are. There’s a journey you can take, but it’s never a rigid one.

Education for Every Stage of an LP Career

Our training is built for every LP, from those just entering the industry to highly tenured LPs looking to sharpen or refresh specific skills.

To help make this easier, we offer ILPA Training Roadmaps, practical guides based on role, experience level, strategy, and team goals. They’re helpful, but not prescriptive. You can follow them closely, skip around, go off-road, and come back when it makes sense for you.

Where to Start: Your “101” Foundation

If you’re new to private markets, the easiest way to get started is with our ILPA Institute Online Self-Paced Programs. Each course is about two hours long and designed to fit into your schedule.

Think of these as your essential Private Equity 101:

  • What is private equity?
  • Who are they key players?
  • How do fund structures work?
  • What are the fundamentals of PE economics?

They’re accessible, clear, compelling, and designed to give you confidence before you move deeper.

The Cornerstone: Private Equity for the Limited Partner

From there, the natural next step, and the premier starting point for most LPs, is Private Equity for the Limited Partner.

This two-day, comprehensive program provides a broad overview of private markets and brings the concepts to life through:

  • Custom case studies
  • Fund benchmarks
  • Legal frameworks
  • Investment and due diligence considerations

For professionals with fewer than three years of experience, this program is especially recommended. It creates the foundation on which everything else builds.

Exploring What Matters Most to You

Within our Comprehensive Series, you’ll also find programs focused on specific strategies and interests, including:

  • Co-investing
  • Private credit
  • Real assets
  • ESG

These courses offer a beginner-friendly, but substantive look at each area, giving you the tools to explore new asset classes or deepen your understanding of your current focus.

Going Deeper: Intensive Learning

Once you’ve completed Private Equity for the Limited Partner, you’re ready to dive into our Intensive Series—where concepts turn into application.

These programs take the fundamentals and explore them in depth, including:

  • Legal documents
  • Investment due diligence (IDD)
  • Operational due diligence (ODD)
  • GP value creation
  • Manager risk
  • Portfolio construction
  • Secondary fund modeling

(Confession: asking us to choose a favorite course is like asking a parent to pick a favorite child—but Investment Due Diligence for the Limited Partner and Operational Due Diligence for the Limited Partner both tend to steal the spotlight!)

Even for LPs who outsource certain functions, especially operational risk, these classes add tremendous value. The human psychology behind risk assessment alone makes them unforgettable.

Skills That Matter at Every Level

Education isn’t just about technical knowledge. That’s why we also offer Communicating with Influence for Limited Partners, a one-day advanced practice program focused on understanding your communication style and using it effectively in high-stakes conversations, regardless of tenure or role.

Flexible, Accessible, and Budget-Conscious

Concerned about time, travel, or budget? You won’t be at a disadvantage.

Our virtual classes deliver the same curriculum, faculty, group work, and networking experience as in-person sessions, just in a more streamlined format. And for those who prefer (or need) to attend in person, ILPA intentionally schedules programs across multiple cities and often groups intensive courses within the same week. One flight, one hotel, up to three courses.

Making the Case to Your Employer

If you need help securing approval, we’ve got you covered. Our website offers one-pagers, learning objectives, and annual calendars, and our education team is always happy to help draft a recommendation or connect you with past participants who can share firsthand insights.

The Bottom Line

There is a journey through ILPA Institute education, but it’s your journey.

Start where you’re comfortable. Follow your curiosity. Take classes in any order. And remember: the experience is about more than lectures. It’s about peer learning, shared perspectives, real-world application, and a community that learns together.

If you’re ready to dip your toes in, there’s no wrong place to start.
